Visual Browser 3
Visual Browser is a standalone application for Mac and Windows that integrates with Ableton Live, and it lets you create a picture-based browser/library of your plug-ins, Live devices/instruments, and Max for Live devices.
- It’s highly customizable.
- It lets you load devices or plug-ins into multiple selected tracks at once.
- You can assign keyboard or MIDI shortcuts to each device or plug-in to load them that way.
- You can navigate it with a MIDI controller, and you can use it in a minimal overlay mode.
Compatibility:
| Ableton | Live 11, Live 12, |
|---|---|
| Platform | Mac (Intel/AppleSilicon) , Windows (x64), Mac, Windows, |
| OPSystems | macOS Ventura - Tahoe, Windows 10 - 11, |
VisualBrowser 3 is easy to use!
Tight Integration with Live
VisualBrowser automatically collects all your Live devices, Max for Live devices, and third-party plugins.
Scrape Thumbnail Images
VisualBrowser can create thumbnail images for your cards by loading effects and instruments into Live and capturing their interfaces.
Drag&Drop Organization
Simply drag and drop categories and cards to customize your library.
Customizable UI
You can change the size of cards and categories, or scale the entire application.
VisualBrowser also comes with multiple color themes!
Presets with Tags
Access the same device and instrument presets you have in Live, using the same tag system.
You can even create new cards directly from presets.
Feature Highlight:
Load FX onto ALL tracks at once!
VisualBrowser can load any effect or plugin onto all selected tracks at the same time — And it's fast! : )
Feature Highlight:
Assign keyboard and MIDI shortcuts
You can assign keyboard and MIDI shortcuts to any effect or instrument to load them into Live.
These shortcuts will work even if VB is minimized and the focused app is Ableton Live.
Feature Highlight:
Navigate with MIDI controllers
You can navigate the interface with any MIDI controller.
You can assign custom navigation mappings, so you can set it up in a way that fits your workflow.
Feature Highlight:
Overlay Mode
If you’ve set up a MIDI controller in VisualBrowser, you can even use it in a minimal overlay mode.
That way, the app only covers a small area in Live (when you use it), and you can still do everything you would do in normal mode.
Feature Highlight:
Multiple color themes
VisualBrowser comes with multiple color themes you can choose from.
Feature Highlight:
Access presets with Tags
You can access the same device and instrument presets as in Live, with the same tag system (if you use Live 12).
You can load these presets directly, or create new cards from them.
Feature Highlight:
Load a random preset!
If you want to experiment,
VisualBrowser can load a random effect or instrument for you — or even a random preset of a random effect or instrument.
Feature Highlight:
Semi-automatic thumbnail creation
VisualBrowser automatically collects every built-in effect, instrument, Max for Live device, and third-party plugin from Live.
It can then create thumbnail images by loading them into Live and capturing their interfaces.

Version 3.0.16 — 2026.02.18
What to update:
- The VisualBrowser3 app.
Fixes:
- Fixed an issue introduced in the previous release, that could prevent the app from starting properly for new users.
Version 3.0.15 — 2026.02.17
What to update:
- The VisualBrowser3 app.
Fixes:
- Fixed an issue introduced in the previous release, that could prevent the card tag filter panel to show any matching cards.
- MIDI controllers reported with different port numbers are now merged on Windows. This prevents VB from detecting the same controller as a new device.
- Reverted a change from the previous version: Ctrl+click on a card now opens the context menu again, restoring compatibility with mice that lack a dedicated right-click (e.g., Apple Magic Mouse).
Version 3.0.14 — 2026.02.09
What to update:
- The VisualBrowser3 app, and the EHRemote script
New/Improved:
- VisualBrowser now checks the version of the EHRemote script, and notifies you if you try to use a wrong version with the current app.
Fixes:
- Ctrl+drag caused the cards area to start scrolling back to the top.
- Ctrl+click no longer opens the card context menu.
- Some cards were invisible during global search.
Version 3.0.13 — 2026.02.04
What to update:
- Everything — the VisualBrowser app, the EHRemote remote script, and the M4L device.
New Features:
-
New Library Collection Preferences panel
When VisualBrowser starts for the first time, it asks which plugin and device types you want to use, and lets you disable extra locations (such as Packs and User folders) where VB can find additional presets or Max for Live devices.
If you already created your library, you can access this panel from the top bar Tools menu under Library Collection Preferences. -
Shift-click parent categories to show all cards inside
VB no longer auto-selects the deepest subcategory — it displays every card instead. -
Keyboard + MIDI shortcuts for category selection
Works the same way as card shortcuts. If you assign a shortcut to a parent category, it behaves like Shift-clicking. -
HiDPI rendering for cards
Automatically enabled in the Settings panel, making card images look significantly sharper. -
New toggle in the top bar search menu: Hide Tags Browser
Disables the Tags browser during Search and Global Search. -
New toggle in the top bar search menu: Auto focus search bar on open
Automatically focuses the search bar when VisualBrowser is opened or gains focus. - New toggle in the Settings panel: Empty card area double-click → Minimize VB
-
New in the M4L device: Option to automatically open VisualBrowser after Live starts
(when a Live Set containing the device is loaded).
Improvements:
- Significantly improved startup times, and VisualBrowser no longer triggers cache re-collection if Live has already collected it.
- Faster Library refresh times.
-
Faster card rendering when switching categories
VisualBrowser now caches rendered cards, making navigation nearly instantaneous after the first render. (Changing card size or application scale clears the cache.)Tip: Hold Shift and click through your main categories once, then scroll down until all cards are rendered. After that, category switching should feel extremely fast — even after restarting VisualBrowser.
- Improved category switching performance in categories with a large number of subcategories.
- Marquee selection and drag-and-drop now auto-scroll the card area when reaching the edges.
- Capture Delay now defaults to 0.8 for new users.
Fixes:
- Fixed an issue that could cause VisualBrowser to hang or refuse to start on Intel Macs.
As a side effect, VB no longer checks permissions on some Intel machines during startup. - Fixed an issue where MIDI and keyboard navigation were not properly linked to card selection. Selecting a card with the mouse now correctly anchors MIDI and keyboard navigation.
- Fixed the Ctrl + M shortcut on macOS — it now properly refreshes MIDI controllers.
- Fixed an issue that could cause VisualBrowser to lose communication with Live on the first attempt when setting up the Library.
Version 3.0.12 — 2026.01.26
What to update:
- Replace / reinstall the VisualBrowser 3 application.
- Everything else remains the same.
New Features:
- Filter cards using tags collected from Ableton Live — click the search bar to open the new Tags area.
A manual refresh from the Tools menu is recommended after updating, as VB did not collect all tags for existing cards prior to this update. -
New Search menu options:
– Hide duplicated cards during global search
– Use global search by default - Greatly improved rendering times when switching categories and using Search.
- Cards are now rendered dynamically. As a trade-off, scrolling in very large categories may feel slightly slower on first render.
- Hovering over a card now shows which category it belongs to — useful during search.
- Updated the User Manual.
Fixes & Improvements:
- Fixed an issue on Windows where certain display scaling settings caused plugin screenshots to be cut off during scraping.
- Renaming a category no longer moves it to the end of the category row.

- Updated the User Manual.
Fixes & Improvements:
