Dim Solo
Dim Solo (or Solo in Front) is a feature that exists in some other DAWs, but Ableton Live doesn’t have this functionality by default.
This Max for Live device brings this feature to Ableton Live.
With the traditional solo function, tracks that are not soloed are muted entirely.
With Dim Solo, non-soloed tracks still bleed through, but at a reduced level.
This can be really useful if you want to focus on a specific track while still hearing the context around it.
It also allows you to solo a track that’s inside a group and hear it without the group track’s effects.

Compatibility
| Ableton | Live 10, Live 11, Live 12, |
|---|---|
| System | Mac, Windows, |

Put the device on your Master track.
You can place it either after your effects, like a compressor or EQ, or before them, depending on how you’d like to hear the soloed track—affected by these effects or not.
One thing to note is that if you use correction plug-ins like Sonarworks Reference, it’s important to position the device before them.
Solo button:
Map the Solo button to a keyboard shortcut or a MIDI controller.
When you select a track in your project and press this shortcut, the device will solo the chosen track. (Due to MFL limitations, you can only solo one track/group/return at a time.)
Floating Volume slider:
You can also turn off this floating slider by deactivating the ‘F’ button on the device.
- By default, the device is in ‘Keep Pan’ mode, and the soloed track will maintain its panning position.
- If you switch it to ‘Center’ mode, the dim-soloed track will be centered even if you’ve changed the track’s pan control.
This can be desirable in certain cases when you want to focus on a track and it’s completely on one side, or its panning is highly automated.
- Place the device or devices in your Ableton Live User Library.
-
Default User Library locations:
- Windows: \Users\[username]\Documents\Ableton\User Library
- Mac: Macintosh HD/Users/[username]/Music/Ableton/User Library
- Live needs to analyze your User Library after adding devices. This process may take some time. In the meantime, you can drag and drop the devices from your User Library onto your tracks.
- After Live finds them, you’ll be able to access them from Live’s Browser.
